Not all furniture survives a severe flood, but fortunately, most antique furniture can be restored back to pre-incident condition. This chest of drawers stood in flood water for many days before being rescued. In a dry, unheated environment with gentle air circulation, the chest was allowed to ‘settle’ before any work could begin. After a thorough cleaning, the full extent of the damage could be assessed. The lower drawers were in very poor condition with all the joints requiring careful dismantling, cleaning and re-setting along with the bottom boards and slips.
The original bracket feet and support blocks were re-jointed
and fitted to the carcase. Finally, the watermarks were removed and the chest re-polished.
